The Closer to Free Ride Road Crew supports riders every mile of the way and is essential to the event’s success. Heart’s Desire & Drunk Enough to Say I Love You

In both of these one-act plays, the breakdown of language creates the universe.
In Heart’s Desire, a mother and father await their daughter’s return from school abroad. However, Churchill edits as she writes. The play ends and starts over and over again, each time embarking on a new outrageous sequence of events and marking additional fear and anxiety the longer the parents must wait.
Drunk Enough to Say I Love You introduces us to lovers Sam and Guy. Their fragmented political discourse reveals their relationship to be more significant than that of mere lovers. These characters speak for actual countries: One giant America dominating a disenchanted England.

Seventeen year old Lavina is orphaned while onboard a ship from Ireland and arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Eventually she is accepted into the world of the big house, and finds herself straddling two very different worlds. Animal Embassy presents Digging into Nature at the Derby Public Library. This event kicks off the children’s summer reading program Dig into Reading.
Discover the reasons why animals dig into the earth’s surface during this hands-on nature presentation. Children will meet an African Sulcata tortoise, a Hognose snake, a soft-shelled turtle, giant Cane toads, a ferret, large rabbit or hedgehog, a Mole salamander and more as we explore the subterranean realm and some of the animals that call it home. Dig in with Animal Embassy and uncover some of nature’s most amazing creatures!

Young adults ages 11-17 are invited to this book discussion: Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King. Overburdened by his parents’ bickering and bully’s attacks, fifteen year old Lucky Linderman begins dreaming of being with his grandfather, who went missing during the Vietnam War. Then, during a visit to Arizona, his aunt and uncle and their beautiful neighbor, Ginny, help him find a new perspective. Multiple copies are available at the circulation desk. Harcourt Wood Memorial Birthday Celebration

The Library will commemorate the birthday of Holton Harcourt Wood, the young boy in whose memory the Library was built. The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with his father, Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902. At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son. His request has been honored ever since. Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake. This time honored tradition has become well known over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond. It has been written about in the New York Times. A memorial plaque in Harcourt’s memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library. The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.

CT RollerGirls host our second annual Derby in Derby 5K at the Derby Greenway (Main St./Caroline St. in Derby, CT)! This year’s event will raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Author Rod Keith, a 35-year resident of Branford, began writing primarily in the genre of military fiction and mysteries soon after retiring from his position as Marketing Director for a Fortune 500 company. Audubon Arts on the Edge

On Saturday, June 8, from 12-5 p.m., families with children of all ages are invited to join us on Audubon Street (between Whitney Avenue and Orange Street) for Audubon Arts on the Edge, an afternoon of free, family-oriented music, dance, and circus performances, hands-on arts-and-crafts activities, and interactive educational programs. Rain or shine!
Several featured performers include the ACES ECA Jazz and Vocal Ensembles, NMS Suzuki Strings, ACES ECA “Folktales from Around the World,” New Haven Ballet, Thelma Ladeira & Ginga Brasileira Dance Company with Afro-Brazilian Dances, and Caldwell Dance Center.
For the 18th year, Audubon Street itself will morph into a concrete canvas on which artists of all ages will create a meandering chalk mural. Children will also be able to make music at the “instrument petting zoo,” create art on a giant painting wall, and make useable art from recycled materials. There will also be a dress up corner, caricaturist, cupcake-decorating table, storytellers, face painters, creative science station, sea life touch tank, and much, much more!
