2nd Annual Breaking Bread Dinner

Sponsored by: Yale Hospitality

The Second Annual Breaking Bread Dinner, presented by Yale Hospitality to support Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK), will take place on Friday, March 23, 2018, 6:00-9:00 pm.  The event will be an opportunity for 100 guests to come together as a community, enjoy some of the finest culinary delights our city has to offer, and support people who are experiencing homelessness or living in poverty.

Hosted by Yale Hospitality at Yale’s newest event venue, Yale on York (150 York Street), Breaking Bread will showcase two of New Haven’s greatest strengths: Food and Community.  The communal spirit of “breaking bread” provides the thematic cornerstone to both DESK’s mission as well as Yale Hospitality’s commitment to making New Haven a healthier and more just place for all its inhabitants.

The evening’s program will include a cocktail hour to give guests the opportunity to mingle with one-another, reconnect with old friends, and revisit the meaning of “community” in New Haven.  The dinner will feature gourmet delicacies prepared by Yale Hospitality’s finest chefs, as well as wine-pairing by the internationally-acclaimed wine connoisseurs at Firriato; guests will enjoy a “family-style” meal that encourages interaction across the table and, hopefully, across proverbial boundaries.

The goal of the Second Annual Breaking Bread Dinner is twofold: (1) to raise $20,000 to support Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen’s mission of serving people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty; and (2) to bring together disparate members of our community to share a family-style meal that promotes community and encourages broad-based support of our neighbors in need.

Tickets may be purchased by phone at (203) 624-6426, by email at, or online at

DESK is a New Haven-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity.  Each year, DESK serves more than 2,300 people through an evening meals program and weekly food pantry right downtown on Temple Street, as well as through a mobile, summer kids pantry.  DESK also recently started catering weekly meals at the East Shore Senior Center.  Powered by over 1,500 volunteers and broad network of supporters, DESK is working daily to realize a world in which people come to our nightly dinners not because they have to, but because they want to.
