Heart’s Desire & Drunk Enough to Say I Love You

Sponsored by: Yale Summer Cabaret

by Caryl Churchill

In both of these one-act plays, the breakdown of language creates the universe.

In Heart’s Desire, a mother and father await their daughter’s return from school abroad. However, Churchill edits as she writes. The play ends and starts over and over again, each time embarking on a new outrageous sequence of events and marking additional fear and anxiety the longer the parents must wait.

Drunk Enough to Say I Love You introduces us to lovers Sam and Guy. Their fragmented political discourse reveals their relationship to be more significant than that of mere lovers. These characters speak for actual countries: One giant America dominating a disenchanted England.

Southern Vermont Dance Festival-Reaching All of New England!

Sponsored by: Building a Better Brattleboro

The festival is scheduled to take place on July 18th – July 21st.  Each ticketed festival attendee will have the opportunity to take three classes, workshops or lectures per day in addition to being allotted a ticket on two evenings to one of the many wonderful formal performances that will be offered throughout the event.  There will be opportunities for attendees to add master classes and workshops to their schedule.  In addition to the opportunities available to ticketed customers, there will be many festival events available to the local community and anyone who wishes to spend the weekend in Vermont.  These events will include workshops, informal concerts, and performances throughout town as well as live music, dance parties and other festivities.  This major festival will reach the New England area including New York City.

The Southern Vermont Dance Festival (SVDF) is one of New England’s first major four day dance festivals.  The goal of SVDF is to reach professional dancers, students and dance enthusiasts alike while showcasing the thriving performing arts community established in Southern Vermont and around New England.  The festival will be hosted in the one and only Brattleboro, VT.  This small New England town will be transformed into a festival of dance performances, workshops and lectures.  Local Brattleboro businesses will host many performances throughout the festival and the streets will be alive with movement.  Workshops and lectures will be hosted by dance studios, conference halls, and venues throughout the town.  The festival attendees will have their choice of several performances to attend each evening.

There will be many amazing opportunities offered to the professional dancer, dance student, and dance enthusiast.  Additionally, there will be a strong commitment to promote local business and advance the thriving performing arts community in Southern Vermont.  This festival weekend will be filled with incredible raffle events, downtown performances and workshops as well as live music and performances hosted by various local businesses.  Thus, this event will be accessible to everyone who is interested in participating in a weekend of dance and movement.

The festival will have a strong focus on promoting dance educators, choreographers and performers   coming from New England and New York and will incorporate some of the top masters of this art form from across the country and beyond.  College students and dance professionals will have the opportunity to submit work to be considered for one of the festivals formal, informal and site specific concerts. The festival will also offer volunteer opportunities to professionals or students
who may not be able to afford the cost of the full weekend festival ticket.

The festival aims to create awareness and promotion of performing arts in Southern Vermont and across New England in addition to offering a summer training opportunity for dancers at all levels of movement and interest.

The Shoemaker’s Prodigious Wife

Sponsored by: Yale Summer Cabaret

by Federico Garcia Lorca

An older shoemaker marries an unruly young woman who berates her neighbors and humiliates her husband with scorn and the threat of younger suitors she could have married. Her husband eventually leaves her alone to make a living for herself. She fends off Casanovas and Don Juans with lament for her lost husband. But once a travelling one-man circus comes to town and unfolds a story very similar to her own, she discovers something that might cure her woe. But will it cure her ways? Celebrate this famous Spanish playwright by experiencing this uniquely poetic voice with us.

Miss Julie

by August Strindberg

At the bottom there isn’t that much difference between people and – people. Miss Julie owns Jean. Or rather, Miss Julie’s father owns Jean. On the eve of the midsummer festival, two twenty-year-old kids take turns demolishing class, society, and each other. Beyond sex, beyond manipulation, Strindberg’s powerful depiction of passion and desire reveals what people are truly capable of. Harcourt Wood Memorial Birthday Celebration

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

The Library will commemorate the birthday of Holton Harcourt Wood, the young boy in whose memory the Library was built. The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with his father, Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902. At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son. His request has been honored ever since. Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake. This time honored tradition has become well known over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond. It has been written about in the New York Times. A memorial plaque in Harcourt’s memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library. The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.

Anita Soos and Ken Lovell at Gallery 195

Sponsored by: The Arts Council of Greater New Haven

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents an exhibition of works by Connecticut artists Anita Soos and Ken Lovell at Gallery 195 at First Niagara Bank, 195 Church St., 4th floor, New Haven. The exhibition will be on display during bank hours from June 18th to September 20th, 2013. An artists’ reception is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend and meet the artists at this closing reception.

Curated by Debbie Hesse, The Arts Council’s director of artistic services & programs, the exhibit pairs the artists because both create abstract rhythms through the use of color, texture and pattern.

“While Anita Soos creates painterly prints that are atmospheric and reference the landscape, Ken Lovell, a digital painter, programs random elements from computer generated templates,” Hesse said. “Both artists explore the balance of chance and choice, as dictated by the processes and materials inherent in their respective mediums.”

Anita Soos graduated from Endicott College in 1968 and is the owner of Anita Soos Design, Inc., a Connecticut-based design company specializing in mail order, product development, greeting card design and advertising for a select group of clients.

In her artistic pursuits, Soos’ primary medium is paint, but also uses pastel, printmaking, drawing and mixed media. In her artist’s statement, she says that she has created bodies of work based on the observations of water and photographic studies for the past 25 years.

“I am continually struck by the notion that the chaos in nature is perfectly ordered. The quality of light, the movement of the water, the time of day, low tide, high tide, wind, calm, sun, rain, clouds, storm. These all converge into a single moment that is singular, never to be repeated,” Soos says.

Lovell received his MFA in painting from Yale University in 1992 and currently works at the institution as the technical director of the Digital Media Center for the Arts.

“My working method involves both digital means and traditional fine art concerns,” Lovell explains in his artist’s statement.  “Random elements and research material are programmatically combined using a digital collage technique of my creation. With these computer-generated templates as a starting point an image evolves, serially, with printed matter being altered by subjective physical performance. This mechanism of production allows elements of chance (the voice of the medium) to co-exist with painterly choices.”

For more information about this exhibition and Gallery 195 at First Niagara Bank, call the Arts Council at (203) 772-2788.

Sponsored by: United Way of Greater New Haven

50 million people in the U.S.—one in four children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger’s Mariana Chilton, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Oscar®-winning actor Jeff Bridges.
