Brews & BBQ featuring Spin Doctors

Sponsored by: Ives Concert Park

Brews & BBQ is back! Come out on Saturday, July 22nd at Ives Concert Park in Danbury to celebrate the change of the seasons with the ultimate spring bash featuring BBQ, craft beer and live music from Spin Doctors! Gates open at 3pm and the event runs until 9pm.

Advance tickets are $15. Tickets at the door are $20.

You think you know the Spin Doctors. Think again. When the legendary New York quartet release “If The River Was Whiskey” on May 14th through Ruf Records, casual fans will discover the secret past the hardcore have never forgotten. To the wider world, the Doctors might be the multi-million-selling icons behind hits like Two Princes and Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, not to mention the classic Pocket Full Of Kryptonite. But in 2013, Chris Barron (vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass) are reconnecting with the flat-broke twenty-somethings who scraped for dollars at the sharp end of the Big Apple blues circuit. The Spin Doctors have come full-circle.
Amateur BBQ Competition

You may grill up some pretty mean bbq on your deck, but do you have what it takes to become Connecticut’s Amateur BBQ Champion?
Every Tuesday from April 18th – May 2nd, Ethan and Lou on i95 will sample delicious pulled pork from 3 contestants and will pick a winner!
At the end of the competition all 3 finalists will compete at Brews & BBQ for the chance to become Connecticut’s Amateur BBQ Champion!

Lunchtime Book Discussion: I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier.  She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring, but her phone is stolen.  She spots a phone in the hotel trash can and takes it, rationalizing “finders keepers”.  As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents, she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life. Fast-paced and funny, this is a tale about how modern technology changes our lives.  Participants are asked to bring a sandwich and a friend as they “chat and chew.”  Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot

Sponsored by: Ives Concert Park

Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot will be rocking out on the Ives stage on Sunday, June 25, 2017. Doors open at 5pm and the show begins at 7pm.

BUY TICKETS HERE: https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1453533?utm_medium=bks

Tickets range from $29.50 to $79.50, plus applicable fees and taxes.

Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy-award-winner BRIAN SETZER is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles.  Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process.  Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist.

He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. Setzer appeared in the 1987 film, La Bamba, portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran. In 2002, Setzer earned the privilege of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons.” That same year, Setzer was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Setzer had the honor of being invited in 2006 to perform at the White House for the President of the United States. In 2014, Setzer received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

Harcourt Wood Memorial Birthday Celebration

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902.  At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son.  His request has been honored ever since.  Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake.  This time honored tradition has become well know over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond.  It has been written about in the New York Times.

A memorial plaque in Harcourt’s memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library.  The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.

Where to Invade Next (Michael Moore) Screening

Sponsored by: Showing Up for Racial Justice, New Haven

Please join us for a screening of Where to Invade Next, a sardonic Michael Moore film which takes a cross-national look at the social systems people have developed for themselves. As we fight for more just systems in our own country, it makes sense to study the successes achieved elsewhere. Let’s study by watching this educational comedy!

The screening itself will be from 1:30 to 3:30, but please come a few minutes early to grab some (free) snacks and settle in. If you can stick around afterward, we have a half-hour set aside for discussion.

Contact Tahlisa (tbrougham13@gmail.com) with questions.

The workshop is appropriate for all ages.  All materials will be supplied, and there will be no fee. After the workshop, visitors can go to the museum to view the collection of Japanese prints and more Asian and Asian-influenced artwork.  Visitors can also explore the beautiful gardens surrounding the museum.

Connecticut Open House Day is sponsored by the Connecticut Office of Tourism (COT) and is designed to broaden awareness among residents of Connecticut’s exceptional art, culture, and history.  This special day encourages residents to become ambassadors who share their newfound discoveries with visiting family and friends.  The Kellogg Environmental Center and Osborne Homestead Museum, operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, are located off Route 34 on 500 Hawthorne Avenue in Derby, CT.  Space for the workshop is limited so please call (203) 734-2513 or email donna.kingston@ct.gov to register or for more information.
