Film: The Battle of Algiers

Sponsored by: Yale Film Archive

Treasures from the Yale Film Archive presents a 50th anniversary screening of THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS, Gillo Pontecorvo’s masterpiece set during Algeria’s struggle for independence. Shot on location and scored by Ennio Morricone, this examination of modern warfare remains tragically relevant in its depiction of urban terrorism and the brutal techniques used to fight it. THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and it was nominated for three Academy Awards. The screening will be introduced by Chris Price, a graduate student in Yale’s Department of Political Science.

35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.

A presentation of the Yale Film Study Center and Films at the Whitney with support from Paul L. Joskow, ’70 M.Phil., ’72 Ph.D.
