Gallery+American Song and Sound

Sponsored by: Yale University Art Gallery

Fusing streams of quintessentially American music into a varied sonic collage, this performance creates a soundscape that responds to the late 19th- and early 20th-century American art on view in the special exhibition It Was a New Century: Reflections on Modern America. Five performers—Ashtan Grace Towles (MC ’19), Elliot Connors (MC ’20), Jack Broza Lawrence (JE ’18), Katherine Lin (MC ’18), and Miles Walter (MC ’18)—play and sing while stationed in separate locations around the exhibition space, shifting between moments of group and independent performance. The result is a 35-minute piece that layers divergent narratives of musical “Americanness,” traces influences across genres, and invites an ambulatory listening. The piece will play twice, first at 5:30 pm and again at 6:15 pm, and is followed by a reception in the Gallery lobby. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition It Was a New Century: Reflections on Modern America.

Gallery+ is an ongoing series of collaborations that invites Yale University students to respond to the Gallery’s collection through special programs and performances.
