Haven String Quartet presents: “Out of Africa, Into Europe”

Sponsored by: Music Haven

The Haven String Quartet at Music Haven presents “Out of Africa, Into Europe”
Kevin Volans: String Quartet No. 1 “White Man Sleeps”
Justinian Tamusuza: Mu KKubo Ery ‘Omusaalaba (On the Way of the Cross) for String Quartet (1988)
Steve Reich: “Different Trains” (1988)

Join the Haven String Quartet for a rare performance of Steve Reich’s iconic work for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, “Different Trains.”

Steve Reich is widely regarded as the greatest living American composer, and that distinction is largely credited to his 1988 masterpiece, “Different Trains.” Composed for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, “Different Trains” relies on recorded testimonies of Holocaust survivors as a melodic base for the composition, which was described by Richard Taruskin as “the only adequate musical response – one of the few adequate artistic responses in any medium – to the Holocaust.”

In addition to “Different Trains,” the Haven String Quartet will perform original works by African composers Kevin Volans and Justinian Tamusuza.
