High School Arts/Writing Competition Deadline Feb 17

High school students have the opportunity to submit artwork, essay, poem or song to the annual African American History Month Arts and Writing Competition for High School Students by Friday, February 17 at 5 pm.
The introduction to the theme states that “Throughout the historic struggle for African American freedom, resistance to oppression has been ongoing. Grass roots organizing and the tireless efforts of President Obama continue to combat racism, poverty and social injustices. Today’s youth movement is joining the struggle.”
Students are asked to address in their submissions the specific question: “What is your vision for the future? How can being involved in the struggle for freedom and equality bring positive change to your life and the larger community?”
Requirements for submissions include: For artwork, paper size not larger than 12” x 15”. For essay, poem or song, not longer than two pages.
Entries must be received by 5 p[m on Friday, February 17, 2012, and must include name, age, school, address, phone and e-mail. Entries can be mailed or hand delivered to the Peoples Center, 37 Howe Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06511.
Gift certificates and recognitions will be awarded on Sunday, February 26 at 4 pm at the 38th annual People’s World African American History Month Celebration, ‘We who believe in freedom cannot rest – reclaiming the struggle in 2012”. All entries will be recognized.
This competition is sponsored annually by the People’s World in Connecticut to remember the lives and work of Dalzenia Henry and Virginia Henry who devoted themselves to the young people of New Haven and to making a better future.
