History of States Covered Bridges Explored in New Book
The Beacon Falls Historical Society has the pleasure of presenting to Beacon Falls and area towns, author William S. Caswell Jr.
The newest edition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular series Images of America and Postcards of America series is Connecticut and Rhode Island Covered Bridges by author William S. Caswell Jr.
In the mid –to- late 1800’s, more than 150 covered bridges spanned the rivers of the two states. Floods, fires and progress claimed the larger percentage of these historic structures with just a few left standing. The bridges spanned the Farmington, Housatonic and Naugatuck rivers in Connecticut. Rhode Island bridges were mostly built by the railroads in Woonsocket, Providence, and communities in the northern part of the state with few pictures known to exist.
William S. Caswell Jr. is a native of Narragansett, RI. Became interested in covered bridges when he moved to New Hampshire in 1984. He is vice president of and historian for the Preservation of Covered Bridges. He maintains a website dedicated to gathering and sharing covered bridge information and pictures.
The covered bridge in Beacon Falls’ is one of many featured in this book. A book signing will follow the authors talk. This would make a great Christmas gift for someone on your list or an edition to your own library of Beacon Falls and Connecticut. Come and listen to the author as he tells of his research into a part of history long gone, in many cases swept away by raging rivers. Saturday, December 10th , 11 AM to 2 PM at the Beacon Falls Senior Center, 57 North Main Street next to the firehouse. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
