Lecture: “Representing Rural Society: Surveyors, Surveying and the Surveyed”

Sponsored by: Yale Center for British Art

Steve Hindle, W. M. Keck Foundation Director of Research, The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens

In England, the late seventeenth century saw the emergence within and beyond government circles of “political arithmetic,” the art of governing by measurement. Drawing on both archival and artistic evidence, Steve Hindle explores some of the local ramifications of the impulse to measure, calculate, and thereby improve the productivity of land and labor in rural England.
