Phaedra’s Love

Sponsored by: Yale Summer Cabaret '16

A queen agonizes, bound by insatiable LUST for her stepson. A prince dreams of death, grasps for ecstasy, and feels nothing. The rotting carcass of a royal family is caught in a tangled web of sex and suffering.

Euripides, Seneca, and Racine wrote their versions of the ancient Phaedra myth as tragedies. Sarah Kane, the late great bad-girl of British theater, proffers it up as a brutal black comedy: a violent, visceral, erotic, merciless examination of love and desire. Come witness what is at once mercifully alien and uncomfortably familiar.

The Phaedra’s Love experience is not appropriate for children or sensitive audience members–the show includes adult language, nudity, simulated sex acts, graphic violence, and violence of a sexual nature.

Adam Geist

Sponsored by: Yale Summer Cabaret '16

Orphaned by his mother’s death, betrayed by his family, and cast aside by society, Adam is a young man who desperately wants to be good, but finds himself constantly at war with the world. Every step he takes–drugs, sex, violence, politics, religion–brings him closer to damnation. As his WRATH takes hold, he falls farther and farther from the light.

Do we carry the seed of sin within ourselves, or does the world make us bad? Follow one of Germany’s most acclaimed contemporary playwrights into the urban wilderness. Find out what happens when everything is taken away, and all you’re left with is anger.

The Adam Geist experience is not appropriate for children–the show includes adult language, nudity, graphic violence, and violence of a sexual nature.

Strapped into An American Dream (CT Author (Glenn Maynard)

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

One week following his wedding, Glenn and his wife quit their jobs, sold their cars and set out on a 35,000-mile trek through the 48 contiguous states.  In a rebuilt RV, they travelled through 23 National Parks, Las Vegas, Mardi Gras, and sleepy ghost towns.  They felt the rush from tornadoes and the rocking from an earthquake.  Wanting to get immersed in America, they slept on roadsides and truck stops.  While many Americans dream of such a trip, few realize this dream.  Through this presentation, you will be able to vicariously take the trip of a lifetime

Antarctica! Which Is To Say Nowhere

Sponsored by: Yale Summer Cabaret '16

Roy is the happiest middle manager in all of middle management–he’s got peace, quiet, and as many French fries as he can shovel in his mouth. But when his ambitious wife Rena convinces him that he can conquer an entire continent, his GREED leaves a trail of disaster in its wake. Blood-soaked penguins, manic reindeer, and a whole chorus of polar wildlife are left seeking retribution for the destruction of their climate-change-ravaged home.

Ubu Roi, Alfred Jarry’s surreal and absurd classic, has been updated for our modern lives. Don’t miss this biting satire on American consumerism, narcissism, and imperialism.

The Antarctica experience includes adult language and stylized violence.

July Accelerated Day EMT Program

Sponsored by: Medical Education Academy

This course will be thought at MedEd 141 South Main St Beacon Falls, CT

July 5th - Aug 12

Monday - Friday 8am-2pm

Emergency Medical Technician

An emergency medical technician (EMT) is an emergency responder trained to provide emergency medical care to the critically ill or injured. EMTs are trained in entry level emergency medical care including those critical skills necessary for rapid response, initial patient assessment and treatment, patient immobilization, patient extrication and movement, and transportation. Patient treatment guidelines are described in local protocols which typically follow both national standards as well as local policies. The goals of EMT interventions are to rapidly evaluate a patient’s condition, maintain an adequate airway, breathing, and circulation. In addition, EMT intervention aims to control external bleeding, prevent shock, and prevent further injury or disability while expediting the safe and timely transport of the patient to the hospital for more definitive care.

This 180 plus hour Emergency Medical Technician (EMT- Basic) course includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level in accordance with the National Standard Curriculum and the guidelines set forth by the State of Connecticut. This exciting, yet demanding course will be taught through academic lecture, hands on demonstration, and practical application settings. Reading assignments and on-line training will be part of this program as well. Adults learn in different ways and must take responsibility for their own learning through goal setting, research and self-evaluation. The instructor is a facilitator of learning who provides objectives, resources, coaching, feedback and evaluation. Adults bring with them to the educational setting life experiences that can be drawn upon as a foundation for learning new information and skills.

You Wrote a Book, Now What?

Sponsored by: Unicorn for Writers

Jan Kardys, Redding’s own resident publishing insider, Unicorn Writers Conference and Unicorn for Writers founder, will give a You Wrote a Book, Now What? workshop for writers at the Edmond Town Hall Theater on June 25th, along with award-winning playwright Bob Zaslow and former art and design director for Bantam Dell Publishing, Glen Edelstein. Kardys says, “We are committed to encouraging authors.”

Kardys, who has worked for more than 35 years in all aspects of the publishing industry, says that the difference between those who are successful and those who are not is that successful writers know how to market their work, including how to use social media. The workshop will provide networking opportunities as well as invaluable information. Kardys says, “As with almost any career these days, it’s not just talent, it’s also about networking.”

The workshop will consist of three sections. Jan Kardys will call on her experience working for ten of NYC’s biggest publishing houses to talk in depth about the big three types of publishing: traditional, self- and blended and which one is right for each person. “You’ll learn about marketing plans, social media, writing a query letter, finding an agent, the role of an editor, and much more.”

Bob Zaslow, playwright, author and teacher, will demonstrate the six elements of effective writing, “from a dreaming up a compelling theme and premise to building believable characters and developing hero empathy and ratcheting up tension” in order to create a book that readers can’t put down. Then Glen Edelstein will teach writers about the elements of good design, from covers to interiors to typefaces, as well as how to make bookmarks, flyers and banners.

In addition, three local Connecticut published authors, Tessa McGovern, Susan Strecker, and Sarah Darer Littman will talk about their books and their path to publishing success and answer questions. The feedback Kardys gets from her workshops is enthusiastic. Writers say they get “not only a good value, but a valuable experience.” Kardys says, “By the very nature of their work, most writers work alone, so this workshop is a great way to network and meet other writers and exchange ideas.”

Harcourt Wood Memorial Birthday Celebration

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902.  At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son.  His request has been honored ever since.  Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake.  This time honored tradition has become well know over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond.  It has been written about in the New York Times.

A memorial plaque in Harcourt’s memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library.  The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.
