Out of Africa, Into Europe-Haven String Quartet

Sponsored by: Music Haven

The Haven String Quartet presents a rare live performance of Steve Reich’s iconic work for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, “Different Trains.”

Steve Reich is widely regarded as the greatest living American composer, and that distinction is largely credited to his 1988 masterpiece, “Different Trains.” Composed for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, “Different Trains” relies on recorded testimonies of Holocaust survivors as a melodic base for the composition, which was described by Richard Taruskin as “the only adequate musical response – one of the few adequate artistic responses in any medium – to the Holocaust.”
