Jennifer Davies’ work gravitates toward Japanese fiber traditions with its emphasis on natural color and strong materiality.  She makes her own Japanese paper from plants and uses it in a variety of ways.  The sheets are often printed with leaf or linear forms and sewn together with overlaps of translucent paper.  The web motifs that interest her are made by dipping weavings into pulp that dry into lacy nets.  Folded forms of thick handmade paper are wrapped with threads and dipped into fine pulp for a series called “Bound Books”.  The use of stitching, weaving, and wrapping techniques allows her to bridge the gap between the traditions of Craft and those of Fine Art.
