SRH-MS DAR to Host Library Lecture

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, in conjunction with Plumb Memorial Library, hosts a talk by author Richard Buel on Saturday, February 6, 2010 from noon to 2pm (snow date will be Saturday, February 13 from 10am-noon).  Richard Buel is the author of The Way of Duty a book on the life of Mary Silliman who was the wife of General Gold Selleck Silliman, who commanded many of the local militia in Huntington and Stratford during the Revolutionary War. 
  After completing his doctorate at Harvard, Richard Buel taught history at Wesleyan University for forty years before retiring in 2002. In addition to The Way of Duty (1984) co-authored with his late wife, Joy Day Buel, he has published five other books that deal with the revolutionary and immediate post-revolutionary periods of American history. He is currently completing a sixth book, a biography of Joel Barlow (1754-1812). He has held fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Humanities Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and most recently from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. During 1999-2000 he inaugurated the Ray Allen Billington visiting professorship at Occidental College and the Huntington Library in Los Angeles.
  The talk will be held in the Meeting Room at Plumb Memorial Library, 65 Wooster St., Shelton, CT at noon on Feb. 6, 2010.  The public is invited and should bring a bag lunch.  Registration is requested by calling the library at 203-924-1580.
