Street Smarts

Sponsored by: City of New Haven

Join Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.and community leaders to officially kick off, “Street Smarts”, a public education and information campaign to enhance road safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

With community-wide involvement and a major focus on city neighborhoods including schools, “Street Smarts” will include educational materials and multiple community events to raise the level of safety awareness in every corner of New Haven.  The “Street Smarts” program will unify independent group efforts by developing an approved, professional curriculum with consistent messages.  The program’s objectives are to:

•  Encourage sensitivity among all three user groups (pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists) and enlist community support for the sharing of New Haven roads
•  Sensitize drivers to the fact that pedestrians and bicyclists are legitimate road users and should always be expected on or near the roadway
•  Educate pedestrians and bikers about minimizing risks to their safety and,
•  Explain the operation of pedestrian facilities, such as crosswalks and pedestrian signals

The event will feature remarks from community coalition leaders and safety experts as well as will honor accident victims.  Families are encouraged to attend; the event will offer free educational materials, giveaways, games and musical entertainment.

The City is seeking event sponsors and asking for financial support from organizations and businesses in the Greater New Haven community to help make the campaign a successful long-term program.
