Elevada

Sponsored by: Yale Repertory Theater

New York City. Right now. Ramona’s going on lots of first dates but is intentionally sabotaging her chances for a second. Khalil, a social media superstar, is about to close a huge deal that will take him completely off the market. They’ll do anything to float above their own lives, even as fate tries to pull them both back down to earth. Elevada is a warm, witty, and wise romantic comedy about the fear of being alone—and the fear of not being alone.

A finalist for the 2014 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, Elevada marks the Yale Rep debut of Sheila Callaghan, “a gutsy writer with a gift for creating vivid images rooted in the emotional life of her characters” (The New York Times), whose plays include That Pretty Pretty; or, The Rape Play and Roadkill Confidential. The world premiere of Elevada is directed by Jackson Gay, who has staged These Paper Bullets! and The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow at Yale Rep.

Sponsored by: Yale Repertory Theatre

THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE
By BERTOLT BRECHT
Directed by LIZ DIAMOND

March 20-April 11, 2015
University Theatre (222 York Street)

About The Caucasian Chalk Circle

In the war-torn country of Grusinia, a young servant named Grusha rescues the abandoned baby of a deposed Governor and raises him as her own. Years later, the ruler’s wife returns to reclaim her child—and the two mothers bring their case before a cynical, battle-weary judge. An epic fable set against the harrowing backdrop of civil war, The Caucasian Chalk Circle puts the competing claims of law and justice, of blood and love, to the ultimate test.

OBIE Award winning Resident Director Liz Diamond (The Winter’s Tale, Happy Now?, Saint Joan of the Stockyards) returns to Yale Rep with a new production of the great 20th-century poet-playwright Bertolt Brecht’s theatrical, lyrical, and bitingly satiric masterpiece, The Caucasian Chalk Circle.

January 30-February 21, 2015

If you haven’t heard about TED talks, you can learn more about them at Milford Library in January.  Started in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, TED today shares ideas from a broad spectrum — from science to business to global issues.  Many TED talks are available online, and are usually about 15 – 20 minutes long.  Celebrities, scientists, educators, and others have added fascinating and unusual ideas.  New ideas in education, economics, health, and politics are showcased in this series.  They are enlightening and entertaining.

Milford Public Library, 57 New Haven Ave., Milford, will be showing a TED talk at 12:15 every Wednesday beginning January 7.  The topics will vary, but they are guaranteed to be interesting and thought-provoking.  There will be a discussion following the viewing for those who are interested.  Attendees are invited to bring lunch – coffee and tea will be provided.  All are welcome and registration is not required.

TED Talks, We Talk

Sponsored by: Milford Public Library

PASSIONES - Jennifer Davies

Sponsored by: City Gallery

City Gallery is pleased to present PASSIONES, an exhibition of new work by Jennifer Davies, January 2 - February 1, 2015.

This exhibit expresses the artist’s passion for experimenting with a variety of paper pulps, but especially Japanese kozo.  The kozo she processes from the plant to obtain either a long fibered pulp for making paper, or pigments and sews the lacy stalks together.  The work refers to textures and designs in nature, from jellyfish, to tree bark, to suggestions of the Milky Way.  Jennifer Davies uses the pulp opaquely as in the casts of granite rocks and in a translucent way in the hanging net pieces.  In addition, she is showing a series of collages combining handmade paper and monotypes.

January 2 – February 1
Opening Reception, Sunday, January 4, 2-5pm
Artist in the Gallery for informal talk, Sunday Jan 25, 2pm
