X Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out
Sponsored by: Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History
This exhibit features 40 stunning black and white images that explore the scientific, environmental, and photographic relevance of fish specimens from the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Sandra Raredon, a staff member at the Museum has been taking x-rays of the fish collection for over 25 years. The goal of the project was to preserve the record of older fish specimens that dated back to the 19th century and also provide a way to study the skeletal structure of these animals without dissection. Somewhere along the way in radiographing 10,000 specimens, she realized the results were not only of interest scientifically but were also astonishingly beautiful. Revealing a complex and delicate bone structure they are works of art in their own right.
