Yale Concert Band presents “Blue Ink: Music of Yale Composers”

Sponsored by: Yale University Bands

The Yale Concert Band, Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director, presents music by Yale composers old and new.

•  Anderson Alden PC ’13 composed Winter Concerto for Electric Violin after his first winter in New Haven. The abilities of the seven-string electric violin get stretched in their attempts to convey the excitement of first snowfall, to the coldest of glassy frosts, to the raucous snowball fights, to the grimy melting mounds. Featuring Jourdan Urbach PC ’13.

•  Nathan Prillaman JE ’13 designed Transcontinental to capture the motion and excitement of a train journey across the country, with its many changes in locale, scenery, and mood. The piece drives forward with propulsive rhythms until the journey reaches its final destination.

•  Charles Ives spent four years on the Yale campus in New Haven, CT, from 1894-1898. Many of the places that he frequented are still intact. Each movement of Thomas C. Duffy’s Three Places in New Haven: Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble addresses one particular place in New Haven. Each is frequented or visited by Rollo, Ives’ fictional character of lowest-common denominator aesthetic sophistication and taste. Featuring Ian Rosenbaum MUS ’11, marimba, and the Yale Band Percussion Ensemble.

… plus Blue Towers (Irving Fine), Russian Christmas Music (Alfred Reed), The National Game (John Philip Sousa), and Overture for Band (Felix Mendelssohn)
