Children’s Summer Reading Program: DREAM BIG- READ! (Preschool-5th Grade)
Sponsored by: DERBY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Registration for the reading program begins May 29th. Children may report books read starting June 11th***Program ends August 10th.
When registering for the reading program, each child will be given a star to add to the night-themed board. A folder will be created for each child upon reporting their first book read along with a journal which will remain in the folder here at the library. When reporting the titles of books read on “postcards” available in the children’s room, library staff will record the information in the journal. Stop in each week to check your folder for reading incentives, activity/puzzle sheets, coupons for our famous treasure chest, and more! There will also be a weekly raffle and everyone who reports on books that week will be in the drawing!
Participation in a summer reading program helps maintain and enhance reading skills acquired during the school year, promotes early literacy, and can motivate a reluctant reader. Pre-readers, including toddlers, preschoolers, and children entering kindergarten, are welcome to join the reading program by having an adult or older child read to them. It is never to early to experience a reading program and begin a lifelong love of books.
This summer there will not be a suggested reading list given to students in the Derby Public Elementary Schools. Children are encouraged to read fiction and non-fiction books at their grade/reading level. To assist in the selection process, the children’s department staff has chosen titles from the collection which will be on display for each grade level. They will be designated with a “Summer” label. In addition, the Governor’s Reading Challenge information will be available.
Children are encouraged to read the following number of books at their reading/grade level.
Pre-readers (preschoolers- entering 1st grade)- 24 books
Entering 2nd and 3rd grades- 10 books
Entering 4th and 5th grades- 4 books
Watch the progress tracker rise as we tally the number of books read each week!
