Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy-award-winner BRIAN SETZER is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles.  Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process.  Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist.

He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. Setzer appeared in the 1987 film, La Bamba, portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran. In 2002, Setzer earned the privilege of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons.” That same year, Setzer was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Setzer had the honor of being invited in 2006 to perform at the White House for the President of the United States. In 2014, Setzer received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

Harcourt Wood Memorial Birthday Celebration

Sponsored by: Derby Public Library

The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902.  At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son.  His request has been honored ever since.  Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake.  This time honored tradition has become well know over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond.  It has been written about in the New York Times.

A memorial plaque in Harcourt’s memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library.  The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.

Plywood Cowboy Concert

Sponsored by: Blue Crane Music

Plywood Cowboy is set for their debut performance at Lyric Hall, 827 Whalley Ave., New Haven, CT, on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 8 p.m.  Tickets are available at the door for $15.  Called “one of the best new bands on the Americana scene” (Chris Bergson, NY Blues Hall of Fame Inductee), Plywood Cowboy’s heart-born songs interweave the rich heritage of earthen, country roots and the poignancy of singer-songwriter traditions. Plywood Cowboy strikes deep at the soul of American music with songs about hound dogs, heart strings, and the vice of the bottle.

Formed in 2015 in the Connecticut River Valley by Steve Dedman, Plywood Cowboy have quickly caught the attention of music lovers, radio stations, music venues and festivals across the region.  Their 2016 debut album, Channel 33, has been called “a gorgeously assured collection of songs” (The Shoreline Times), “a seriously hooky debut EP” (The Day), and “steeped in tradition, with lyrics full of longing, truth and heart” (Sound Waves Magazine).  On the heels of hugely successful release concert at The Kate in Old Saybrook, the band continues to expand across the state and region.

Becoming one of the most sought-after bands from Connecticut, they’ve been invited to perform at such venues as The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center, Performance HUB, iCRaVe Music Fest at Ivoryton Playhouse, Middletown Music Festival, Glastonbury Apple Harvest Festival, Meriden Daffodil Festival, Portland Music Festival, and a performance alongside Poet Laureate Billy Collins at the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival.

Cowboys of the airwaves, the band’s name is a nod to the man who taught young Dedman to pick guitars in country-western style. Few knew that man by his real name, but many knew him by his CB handle, “Plywood Cowboy”, a reference to his day job hauling lumber around the northeast.

The concert will feature Austin Gray (guitar, vocals), Ed Iarusso (pedal steel), Jason Apostoleris (percussion), Kat Wallace (violin), Shane Tanner (bass), and Steve Dedman (keyboard, guitar, lead vocals).  Tickets for the May 20 performance at Lyric Hall are $15 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m.  More information can be found at www.plywoodcowboy.com.

Solar Jam

Sponsored by: Solar Youth

Senator Gary Winfield, a champion for economic justice issues and strong ally for today’s youth, will keynote the event and be honored with our Awesome FOSY award (FOSY=Friend of Solar Youth).  In addition to the award, there will be a live (and silent) auction that will include many exciting items from holiday packages to fine dining.  EXCITING NEWS:  Our auctioneer this year is one of the YOUTH leaders of our program, coached and supported by local leaders.

Solar Youth’s auction is like no other, focusing on experiences offered by local notables such as the extremely popular wine and cheese pairing class at your home with culinary celebrity Jason Sobocinski of Caseus; an African Safari trip, a 5-course summer harvest dinner for 8 at your home, a Pasta making dinner for 6 with Chef Avi Szapiro of Roia.  AND LOTS MORE!  http://solaryouth.org/Auction

Solar Jam will take place from 6:00pm to 9:30pm on Thursday, May 18st at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies’ Kroon Hall. The event will feature food, drinks, music and a live and silent auction. All proceeds support Solar Youth programs that empower youth from New Haven’s high-poverty neighborhoods to achieve lifelong success.  We do this through our unique program model which includes long-term supportive relationships, and programs that happen IN their neighborhoods where youth EXPLORE their ENVIRONMENT, become PROBLEM-SOLVERS and practice LEADERSHIP.  To register for the event, go to:  http://solaryouth.org/solar-jam.

Solar Jam is presented by Griswold Home Care along with sponsorship from Yale University, Carmody Torrance Sandak and Hennessey LLP, Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Eder Bros Inc., Yale-New Haven Hospital,  Start Community Bank, Stop and Shop, and Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven.

About Solar Youth:

Brews & BBQ featuring Spin Doctors

Sponsored by: Ives Concert Park

Brews & BBQ is back! Come out on Saturday, May 13th at Ives Concert Park in Danbury to celebrate the change of the seasons with the ultimate spring bash featuring BBQ, craft beer and live music from Spin Doctors! Gates open at 3pm.

Advance tickets are $15. Tickets at the door are $20.

You think you know the Spin Doctors. Think again. When the legendary New York quartet release “If The River Was Whiskey” on May 14th through Ruf Records, casual fans will discover the secret past the hardcore have never forgotten. To the wider world, the Doctors might be the multi-million-selling icons behind hits like Two Princes and Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, not to mention the classic Pocket Full Of Kryptonite. But in 2013, Chris Barron (vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass) are reconnecting with the flat-broke twenty-somethings who scraped for dollars at the sharp end of the Big Apple blues circuit. The Spin Doctors have come full-circle.
