June Lunchtime Book Discussion
Sponsored by: Derby Public Library
The novel is based on the true story of a labor and delivery nurse who was prohibited from caring for a newborn because the father requested that no African-American nurses tend to his baby. A medical crisis results in the infant’s death and a murder charge against a black nurse named Ruth Jefferson. Jodi Picoult tackles race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion—and doesn’t offer easy answers. Using the narratives of Ruth, the baby’s father, and the female public defender who takes Ruth’s case, Picoult examines multiple facets of racism. Small Great Things is an important and thought-provoking novel about power and prejudice that deserves to be read, digested, and shared with others.
Viola Davis and Julia Roberts will star in the soon to be released movie version.
Multiple copies are available at the main circulation desk.
Lunchtime Book Discussions are held the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Conference | Full of Your Glory: Liturgy, Cosmos, Creation
Sponsored by: Yale Institute of Sacred Music
The conference will explore ideas of creation and cosmos embedded in the worship life of the church at a time of unprecedented attention to ecological and cosmological concerns. Conference speakers will highlight some of the rich traditions of the past (ritual, visual, and musical, among others) and also address contemporary concerns. The broader aim of the conference is to offer the resources of the liturgical tradition—and its particular insights—to the ongoing conversations around ecology and cosmology. It will become clear that liturgy has always been about more than human beings at worship: specific understandings of creation and the cosmos are in fact at the heart of all Christian worship.
Conference schedule and speakers list forthcoming.

SS United States: Built for Peace, Prepared for War
Sponsored by: Seymour Public Library
The Seymour Library welcomes again the Bowtie Historian Jason Scappaticci on May 23, 2018 at 6:30 pm.
Mr. Scappaticci will speak on the SS United States. The ship was built by the leading naval design firm of Gibbs & Cox with a design by William Francis Gibbs himself during 1950-1951. The United States government underwrote $50 million of the $ 78 million cost of the ship which was built to exacting specifications so that it could be used as a troop carrier or hospital ship with little refitting.
The designer Gibbs not only wanted to satisfy the government’s needs but wanted the ship to be the fastest and the most beautiful ship on the sea. On her maiden voyage she broke the Transatlantic speed record (held for 14 years by RMS Queen Mary) by 10 hours. Mr. Scappaticci will tell of the ship’s history and its current situation.

A Well Regulated Militia
Sponsored by: Milford Public Library
Gun control continues to be a divisive topic in our country, especially in light of recent events. On Tuesday, May 22 at 7 p.m., the Milford Library will host a presentation that addresses this issue.
Historian Mark Albertson will speak on “A Well Regulated Militia”. This talk goes beyond the simple pro vs. con debate on the gun issue. Rather, it traces the evolution of the Citizen-Solder from colonial time to today’s National Guard. Is the militia concept as outlined in the Militia Act of 1792 still applicable, considering today’s National Guard as a bona fide reserve of the United States Army?
This thoughtful history examines the changes in America’s defense from the colonial era until today. Albertson will follow this evolution, which goes hand-in-hand with continental expansion, and centralized government control in the United States, as America severs its colonial roots to become a global super power. Just what constitutes a Well Regulated Militia and how does it affect the citizen’s right to bear arms?

Parental Rights Rally
Sponsored by: American Liberty Center
Contact: Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh
Cell: 860-449-2007 EMAIL: lorionliberty@gmail.com
GROWING LIST OF NATIONAL AND LOCAL SPEAKERS
LINE UP FOR THE MAY 19th PARENTAL RIGHTS RALLY
HARTFORD, CT - On Saturday, May 19th, 2018, from 11am until 3pm, diverse family protection organizations, faith leaders, legal advisors, medical experts, educators, citizens, and public officials will gather to address what is a pronounced increase of government overreach into the constitutional rights of parents across America. Thus far, speakers include nationally and locally recognized experts: Media host and homeschool expert, Dr. Duke Pesta; public education expert Dr. Sandra Stotsky; Attorney Deborah Stevenson of National Home Education Legal Defense; Hal Shurteff of Camp Constitution; Pro-life activist Christina Marie Bennett; Family Institute Executive Director, Peter Wolfgang; Brian Camenker, Executive Director of Mass Resistance; Lynne Taylor the Common Core Diva; Anne Manusky of Child Abuse in the Classroom; and, Pastor Earl C. Wallace of Liberty Christian Fellowship Church. Victim parents may also address the rally.
Radio Host and Constitutional Conservative Activist, Lori Hopkins Cavanagh of the Lori on Liberty Show, and founder of the American Liberty Center, will host the event. information on the current list of speakers is found here: https://americanlibertycenter.org/speakers/
This rally was organized, in part, as a response to the passage of Public Act 17-5 AN ACT CONCERNING THE PROTECTION OF YOUTH FROM CONVERSION THERAPY in Connecticut. https://www.cga.ct.gov/2017/act/pa/2017PA-00005-R00HB-06695-PA.htm
This law was passed without cause and without the knowledge or participation of parents and health care practitioners. It has the potential of inflicting widespread, irreparable, life threatening harm to minor children, against their parent’s wishes and without their consent. It also presents an unconstitutional legal quagmire that is not in the best interest of the peoples of the states.
This law dangerously prohibits health practitioners from providing life sustaining, restorative healthcare to their clients. It prohibits the dissemination of scientifically proven and statistically factual information to parents and minor children, as to what is the safest, most natural path to sexual, physical and mental health.
This conversion therapy law is an example of extreme government overreach in response to a radical progressive propaganda movement that is an affront to nature, nature’s God, science, faith and truth. This law legalizes parental alienation and the child kidnapping of gender and sexually confused minors.
Minor children are being subjected to ideologically extreme and gender and age inappropriate sex and social education in public schools through Common Core and ESSA initiatives that have failed our traditional morals and family values, and have proven to increase depression, sickness, promiscuity, violence, drug addiction, suicide and American genocide through abortion targeting minors and young adults.
This rally seeks to increase awareness of the radical and dangerous social, political and sexual indoctrination of our children within the public school system and the anti-American ideology written into the Common Core curriculum and built into the Every Student Succeeds Act. American Liberty Center plans to include speakers who can address other issues including; family court issues, mandatory vaccinations, parental registries, consent violations, medical kidnapping; and the rights of parents to arm and protect their families, are in the works.
“The right of parents to rear their minor children is a natural unalienable right which includes the right to follow family established morals and values in private, and without government overreach. Deeply rooted and proven successful, traditional and biblical morals and values are the foundation for our ‘Uniquely American Liberties’ and protected by both state and federal constitutions. Traditional American family values is being openly, unjustly, and dishonestly attacked and condemned in a manner that is bigoted, hateful and damaging to American society, and to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” said Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh, organizer of the rally.
###
American Liberty Center is a nonpartisan organization formed in November 2015 to identify and expose threats to our uniquely American liberties and to preserve our open and free society.

Book Signing by Hanna Holborn Gray
Sponsored by: The Foote School
Hanna Holborn Gray has lived her entire life in the world of higher education. The daughter of academics, she fled Hitler’s Germany with her parents in the 1930s, emigrating to New Haven, where her father was a professor at Yale University. She has studied and taught at some of the world’s most prestigious universities. She was the first woman to serve as provost of Yale. In 1978, she became the first woman president of a major research university when she was appointed to lead the University of Chicago, a position she held for fifteen years. In 1991, Gray was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to education.
An Academic Life is a candid self-portrait by one of academia’s most respected trailblazers. Gray describes what it was like to grow up as a child of refugee parents, and reflects on the changing status of women in the academic world. She discusses the migration of intellectuals from Nazi-held Europe and the transformative role these exiles played in American higher education—and how the émigré experience in America transformed their own lives and work. She sheds light on the character of university communities, how they are structured and administered, and the balance they seek between tradition and innovation, teaching and research, and undergraduate and professional learning.
An Academic Life speaks to the fundamental issues of purpose, academic freedom, and governance that arise time and again in higher education, and that pose sharp challenges to the independence and scholarly integrity of each new generation.

Jennifer Pharr Davis at Denali Old Saybrook
Sponsored by: Denali
On Friday, May 11th, 2018, Denali Old Saybrook will host athlete, author, speaker, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis. The program will be held at the store from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM and is free and open to the public.
Jennifer Pharr Davis has logged over 14,000 miles on six different continents, including thru-hikes of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Colorado Trail, Vermont’s Long Trail, numerous trails in Europe, and the Appalachian Trail three times. In 2011, Jennifer wanted to test her physical limits. With the help of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of friends, she set the fastest known time (male or female) on the “A.T.” by hiking 47 miles a day for 46 days straight.
Jennifer will be sharing slides and stories, answering questions, and reading excerpts from her new book The Pursuit of Endurance (Viking). Publisher’s Weekly says, “this inspiring work (is) at times reminiscent of the writings of such travel memoirists as Cheryl Strayed and Bill Bryson (and) could become a regular companion for distance hikers or, indeed, for anyone embarking on a personal challenge.”
Jennifer will also be selling and signing books after the program. For her adventures, she has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, ESPN, and the CBS Early Show. She is founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company (www.blueridgehikingco.com), an Asheville, North Carolina-based guiding service whose mission is “to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable through the written and spoken word, instruction and guiding.”
