Armistice Day: November 11, 1918

Sponsored by: Seymour Public Library

The Seymour Library is pleased to again welcome the historian Mark Albertson. Mr. Albertson is a historical researcher editor at the Norwalk Community College. Mr. Albertson will give a lecture on the Armistice of 1918.
On November 11 at 11:00 in 1918 the shooting stopped at the Western Front after four long years in the trenches. But the ceasefire signed in the famous French railway car at Campiegne was more than a cease fire.
It was the beginning of the descent of the German state into chaos. The German general staff denied the reality of its defeat and began to blame the “Others” in the state—the Jews, Democrats, Socialists and Communists—they had “caused” their defeat.
The demands of France, England and the United States for reparations also played into the coming anarchy of the German state which lead into the next war.
