2019 Litchfield House Tour and Garden Stroll

Sponsored by: The Litchfield Aid of the Connecticut Junior Republic

A historic Open House Tour on July 12 and 13, 2019 is being planned by The Litchfield Aid of the Connecticut Junior Republic (CJR).  The Aid’s Sixty-Seventh Open House Day will be a one-mile walking tour within the Borough of Litchfield, a National Historic Landmark District.*  The Tour will benefit the CJR, a Litchfield-based non-profit organization that helps children, youth and families in 13 locations across Connecticut.
The rain or shine benefit will begin with a Preview Tour and Party on Friday, July 12, followed by a tour from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday, July 13.  The 2019 event will feature nine notable homes, the majority of which are located on Litchfield’s stately North and South Streets.  Representative of Litchfield’s 300-year history, the tour will feature houses that date from a relocated 1685 Saltbox and will take guests through three centuries, ending with a stunning 1954 Marcel Breuer Mid-Century Modern home. The homes on tour, including Georgian, Greek Revival, Colonial, Victorian-Italianate, and of course the prevailing Litchfield Colonial Revival style, have been selected to capture over 300 years of village life and architectural interest in the thriving, vibrant center of Northwestern Connecticut.  Further details about the event will be announced later this year.
Established in 1911 by a small group of Litchfield women, The Litchfield Aid of CJR has supported the programs and facilities of the Connecticut Junior Republic for more than 100 years and currently has nearly 100 members.  The Aid conducted an annual Litchfield House Tour for 66 years, between the summers of 1934 and 2013.  During 2014 and 2017, the Aid conducted other successful local events. Since its inception, The Litchfield Aid’s activities have netted in excess of $2.5 million to support CJR programs and services.
* The Borough of Litchfield, Connecticut reflects over 300 years of American history throughout the structures comprising the Borough and its Historic District. In 1959, the entire Borough was designated a Historic District by a special act of the Connecticut General Assembly. Later, the Litchfield Historic District and several buildings received even more prestigious designations as National Historic Landmarks, the highest recognition for culturally and historically significant sites in the U.S.
Media releases later this year will provide further details on The Litchfield Aid’s Tercentennial Open House Day.  For promotional opportunities in advance of next year’s Open House event,  please contact Hedy Barton at the number below.
Founded in 1904, the Connecticut Junior Republic (CJR) provides residential and community-based care, treatment, education and family support for vulnerable at-risk, special needs and troubled young people so they may become productive and fulfilled members of their homes, schools and communities.  Today, the organization’s combined programs serve approximately 2,000 boys and girls annually in 13 locations throughout Connecticut.
A private charitable organization, the Connecticut Junior Republic is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).  CJR is supported by gifts from individuals, businesses, foundations and organizations, and through service contracts funded by the Judicial Branch Court Support Services Division (JBCSSD), the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS), and by Connecticut’s public schools.  For further information on CJR’s programs, please contact Hedy Barton, Director of Development and Public Relations (860) 567-9423, extension 252; or by email: hbarton@cjryouth.org.

Joe Vescey (Netflix) - Comedy in the Lobby

Sponsored by: Wall Street Theater

Joseph Vecsey just appeared Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix movie “Sandy Wexler” where he also served as a producer on the film. He was also a producer on Netflix’s “The Week Of” starring Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and Steve Buscemi that just came out this past April. Also coming out this summer, Joseph is acting and a producer on “Graduates” that stars David Spade. Joseph can most recently be seen in the hit commercials and web series “The Unmovers.” The first season reached over a million views online which made them do a season 2 which was quite successful as well. He also wrote, directed, starred, and produced the parody sketch “Stud Walk” for Charlamagne The God’s MTV2 show “Uncommon Sense.” Joseph made his TV stand up debut in 2015 on “Gotham Comedy Live” on AXS TV and was named one of Comedy Central’s top ten Comics To Watch the following year. Joseph’s first experience with Happy Madison was being an on set writer for Adam Sandler’s “The Do Over” which is one of Netflix’s most watched movies in history. Shortly after, Vecsey went on to open for Adam Sandler, David Spade, Norm Macdonald, Nick Swardson, and Rob Schneider in arenas and theaters during The Do Over and Here Comes The Funny Tour. Joseph then helped write the promo sketch “Sandy Wexler visits Nascar” as the press for the film “Sandy Wexler. The Call Back Podcast is still something audiences can still check out where Joseph interviewed super stars such as Garry Shandling, Chris Rock, Aziz Ansari, and Tom Green all about the process and craft of their careers. The podcast actually lead to Joseph’s first writing opportunity which was for comedian/writer Neal Brennan’s(co-creator of Chappelle Show) one off Jordan brand’s sketch show starring NBA stars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul that aired on Adult Swim and currently streaming on Youtube.

Jacob Weidenmann: Hartford Landscape Architect of Bushnell Park and Others

Sponsored by: Seymour Public Library

The Seymour Library is pleased to have once again the “Bowtie Historian” Jason Scappaticci speaking on Jacob Weidenmann the landscaping genius who developed the first publicly funded park in the United States—Bushnell Park. Rev. Horace Bushnell was referred to Weidenmann by the better known Frederick Law Olmsted to develop the park.
The European educated Jacob Weidenmann took a blighted property in the center of Hartford and transformed the land from a literal pig sty and garbage dump to a tree lined river front property for the diversion of the working poor.
The Park was one of the first of Weidenmann’s many American works in a long illustrious career. Mr. Scappaticci will speak on Weidenmann’s masterpiece in Hartford and his further works.

Lay Me Down Softly

Sponsored by: Connecticut Irish Theater Troupe

The Connecticut Irish Theater Troupe Presents
“Lay Me Down Softly”, Written by Billy Roche,
Directed by Karl Ryan.
A funny, bittersweet tale of love and pugilism.
HAMDEN, CT June 4th - The Connecticut Irish Theatre Troupe announces its annual drama presentation, “Lay Me Down Softly”, written by Billy Roche. The play will run on July 28th at 7:30 PM and July 29thth at 3 PM at Whitneyville Cultural Commons, 1253 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT.
Roche’s play, set somewhere in 1960’s Ireland, brings us to Delaney’s Traveling Roadshow. It tours the Irish countryside with bumper cars, bearded ladies, rifle ranges and the main attraction: the boxing ring. The story tells of the denizens of the old-fashioned fighting tent which invites all comers to fight for a prize. The world is leather, sweat and hard punches. But in this world of reminiscences and dreams, a mysterious beauty arrives with ties to their past. The gloves come off and the boys come out swinging.
Dublin born Karl Ryan, well known and long respected as an exceptional actor and director in local Irish drama circles, brings his cerebral understanding of Irish social interaction to a very talented and well experienced group of actors.
Lay Me Down Softly is the honest, struggling, everyman fighter with a hint of the Rocky Balboa about it; an everywhere and nowhere-set tale, where life is all about the fight and fighting is a way of life. Roche excels again in evoking a mood and period, slowly creating character studies as if for a group portrait in oils, or a sepia-tinted print.
The ICSA is a 501c(3) charitable organization aimed at maintaining and sharing our Irish culture and heritage and supporting other community groups in their endeavors.
