SS United States: Built for Peace, Prepared for War

Sponsored by: Seymour Public Library

The Seymour Library welcomes again the Bowtie Historian Jason Scappaticci on May 23, 2018 at 6:30 pm.
Mr. Scappaticci will speak on the SS United States. The ship was built by the leading naval design firm of Gibbs & Cox with a design by William Francis Gibbs himself during 1950-1951. The United States government underwrote $50 million of the $ 78 million cost of the ship which was built to exacting specifications so that it could be used as a troop carrier or hospital ship with little refitting.
The designer Gibbs not only wanted to satisfy the government’s needs but wanted the ship to be the fastest and the most beautiful ship on the sea. On her maiden voyage she broke the Transatlantic speed record (held for 14 years by RMS Queen Mary) by 10 hours. Mr. Scappaticci will tell of the ship’s history and its current situation.
