| Details | Fifty years ago on September 11, 1973, a coup in Chile overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende and set up a rightwing military regime. Several days later, Chilean singer-songwriter Victor Jara would become one of the regime’s many victims. Tortured and murdered while in detention, Jara would come to symbolize the struggle against fascism that swept across Chile and other South American countries during the 1970s. Produced by John Summa, the award-winning film is a poignant exploration of the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Victor Jara, a renowned South American singer-songwriter and activist. Jara’s music and values continue to resonate as powerful symbols for human rights and social justice. The film delves into Jara’s role as a masterful artist who rejuvenated traditional folk music, making it contemporary and relevant. Through interviews with his wife, Joan Jara, legendary Chilean music groups, and global artists like Arlo Guthrie, Peter Yarrow, Pete Seeger, and Bono, the film weaves a rich tapestry of Jara’s social commitment and influence. All are welcome and there is no charge for the event, which will include a post-screening Q&A by Dr. Summa. Donations accepted.
