Leon Gurvitch’s multi-faceted musical mastery as the consummate triple-threat — composer, conductor, pianist — has thrilled audiences throughout the world for decades. He has received effusive praise and garnered endless accolades for his prodigious body of work. The ofttimes esoteric texts on which his works are based never fail to intrigue and engage the listener. With Gurvitch as guide, the listener explores the entire world which has become his personal palette of sound. Euro-jazz, Slavic yearnings, Asian, Latin, Klezmer sensibilities…shaken, not stirred. The result is a most electrifying, exotic, ever elegantly presented tonal feast — a delectable charcuterie of sound. The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and many of the world’s most august concert halls have premiered his works.

Elizaveta Ulakovich was raised in the cultural epicenter of St Petersburg. After her study at the St Petersburg Conservatory, she was accepted as a Young Artist by the Bolshoi, performing in its Beethoven Theater perhaps one hundred times over the years. She graced the main stage as diva in several important roles at the historic Bolshoi Theater. In 2022, she made her debut with the New York City Opera, performing as soloist for the U.S. premiere of the singularly poignant and powerful Concert for Sugihara at Carnegie Hall. Her effervescent and most engaging and vibrant presence have earned her a devoted following in the U.S. and worldwide.

Alisa Sadikova, as a musical wunderkind, took the musical establishment of St. Petersburg and Europe by storm. She is now studying at Julliard School of Music. She has delighted audiences at endless venerable concert venues throughout Europe, receiving an astonishing number of prestigious awards. She toured Europe extensively with Sarah Brightman and the uber-intriguing band Gregorian. Her playing thrills the listeners with its equal parts of technical brilliance and soul-stirring expressiveness. Her virtuosity is made all the more compelling for its vibrant freshness and defiance of convention. Her music is simply captivating for its colorful even kaleidoscopic exploration of divergent musical styles. In the US, she has received critical acclaim for her performances at Carnegie and Alice Tully Halls.
The Yale Russian Chorus recently celebrated its seventieth anniversary with a most memorable performance, truly a tour de force. The voices of seventy-five choristers, from undergrads to octogenarians, resounded most powerfully in the storied, vaulted grandeur of Yale’s Woolsey Hall. The group was enthusiastically received with an ovation that was rapturous, even raucous. The YRC has toured Eastern Europe 19 times over the decades. It is a tenor and bass ensemble whose extensive repertoire explores the intriguing and rich liturgical and folk musical traditions of Eastern Europe and beyond.
The evening brings together a delightful musical mélange. According to conductor Gabriel Mesa, the night is about exploring the theme of choral resonances in instrumental music”. The YRC and our esteemed and illustrious musical guests extend an invitation to savor the textural counterpoint among soloists, instrumentalists and the chorus. Come and celebrate!
