Details | The Seymour Library welcomes Christina Rewinski from the Connecticut Museum of Culture & History (formerly the Connecticut Historical Society) to tell the story of one of Connecticut’s worst fire disasters AND one of America’s worst fire disasters of the twentieth century. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey afternoon performance was well attended and as it was during wartime was packed with women and children for the 2:15 show when a small fire broke out. The small fire grew to be not so small VERY quickly due to the setup of the big top for the show and the wartime use of paraffin wax to waterproof the vast canvas of the tent. The deaths from panic and burns were in the hundreds. The surviving victims were scarred emotionally and bodily for the rest of their lives. The circus fire has lived in the memories of survivors and the imaginations of the Connecticans ever since. In this presentation photos and artifacts from the Connecticut Museum collection will help tell the stories of that day. The presentation will examine the ways in which Connecticans have continue to identify, honor, and bring justice to the victims in the intervening decades.
