Details It was a near-death accident that forced an abrupt stop to Millie Grenough’s high-velocity lifestyle. In her months of recuperation she made two promises to herself: 1) she would find specific strategies for herself to live a saner, more balanced life, and 2) if the strategies worked for her, she would find ways to share them with her harried colleagues.

The strategies worked big time! Since then, Millie’s 60-second Oasis in the Overwhelm strategies have helped thousands of people from all walks of life find balance and enjoyment. She has shared Oasis in person with groups throughout the USA, Latin America, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Oasis in the Overwhelm. New editions have followed as well as a new book, Oasis in the Overwhelm 28-Day Guide: Review Your Brain from Chaos to Calm, all available in English and Spanish.

Millie credits her working-class Kentucky family, her eight years as a Maryknoll Sister, her six years living and working in Bolivia/Peru and Spain, her trainings with body/mind pioneer Ilana Rubenfeld, buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, EMDR found Francine Shapiro, and mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn with teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn with laying the foundation for the scientific foundation and simple wisdom of the Oasis Strategies. She is grateful that the Strategies remain true and are even more relevant in the challenges of daily living today.

Millie is a longtime social worker, executive coach, and clinical instructor in social work at the Yale University School of Medicine. She is married to Paul Bloom, Abbot of the Zen Center of New Haven, grandmom to six. She continues to present Oasis in person and via zoom and recently began playing the upright bass in a bluegrass group to help her balance the stresses in her life.

In addition to her talk, Mille will demonstrate stress reduction techniques that are practical, easy to learn, take only sixty seconds, and are designed to help busy people be more effective and happier at work and at home.

Quotes – from New Haven folks and a reviewer from India:

The world gets ever more overwhelming – and Millie’s OASIS ever more essential, healing, and timely.” David L. Katz, MDMPH

There is practical and simple information available in this book to help restore you on your journey through life.” Bernie Siegel, MD

“ One of the reasons I think many people will love OASIS is that it simply organizes various thoughts, methods and practices that people like me have been using in a desultory fashion to try to keep sane.” Anne Tyler Calabresi, Community Volunteer

A great read if your life is crazy and you want to relax. I have already practiced each of the books four techniques and my wife has noticed the difference. I am commending OASIS to my mother and mother-in-law who both recently lost their husbands and are in search of the Oasis and the overwhelm of their daily lives. I hope they get as much out of it as I did.” John Cirello, Judge

What a whiff of fresh air! Millie’s book comes as a clear stream of reason’ in the dreary desert sand of dead habit,’ as in Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali. 60-second strategies for balance in a busy world,’ if only you have time to pause for a minute!” D. Murali, The Hindu Business Line
