Details Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) begins its 80th season exploring New Horizons as maestro Eduardo Leandro takes the podium to lead 59 musicians in its season premiere concert, Horizons of The Air,” October 4 at The Klein Memorial Auditorium in Bridgeport, CT. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

Horizons of The Air” will feature Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 as well as Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Caroline Shaw’s evocative Entr’Acte. The new Maestro is brimming with excitement about the concert, saying The first concert – Air – will have Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, a haunting piece for solo violin and orchestra, played by the virtuoso Brunilda Myftaraj,” says Eduardo Leandro. She’ll follow a beautiful and wistful piece for strings by Caroline Shaw. The concert ends with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 an ode to survival in challenging times, and a score that has one of the most elating last movements of any symphony.” Shaw, who lives in Connecticut, is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, several Grammys, and an honorary doctorate from Yale. Her piece in this concert blends the best of modern orchestral music with great classics.

“’Horizons of The Air’ is so well portrayed in The Lark Ascending,” says GBS President Mark Halstead. It just makes you feel as though you’re soaring into the sky, looking out to far horizons, and that’s the way we feel about GBS this season. Eighty years behind us, and a great future ahead of us – fantastic music all season long! We’re happy to see so many of our longtime friends returning as subscribers, along with a lot of new friends.”

Horizons of The Air” will be the first of the five-concert season and will showcase music based in the essential, the five classical elements: Air (October), Fire (November), Earth (March), Water (April), and Quintessence, the magical fifth element that makes up everything the other four elements do not (December).

GBS’s upcoming season is dedicated to the life and work of the late Bridgeport industrialist Herbert Harrington and his wife Doris, who served as GBS Board Chair from 2013 until her passing last February. They both gave their hearts and souls to GBS, and we’ll go on in their great example,” said Halstead. Horizons of The Air” is sponsored by the Ernest and Joan Trefz Foundation, which has supported GBS for decades.
