Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) Presents Horizons Of The Earth March 14 at Mertens Theater at the University of Bridgeport

Sat Mar 14 , 7 – 10 pm

Hosted by Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS)
Details Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) continues its 80th season exploring New Horizons as conductor Eduardo Leandro presents classics and never-before-heard music in Horizons Of The Earth Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Mertens Theater (in the Bernhardt Center at the University of Bridgeport) at 7:30 PM.

Maestro Leandro is excited to bring two musical classics evocative of the earth to life with Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, together with a brand-new composition: The Rainbow Bridge, a concerto for saxophone with the eminent Travis LaPlante, its composer, soloing on sax. Says Leandro, When I was asked for notes on this piece last December, all I could say was that it would be exciting for audience and players alike. The music is just finished and is really exciting! Travis is an amazing artist, a master of circular breathing.’ He can make sounds on the saxophone like most people have never heard. Our audience is in for a treat!”

The Ravel and Copland pieces in this concert will evoke images of the earth. Close your eyes during Mother Goose and Appalachian Spring, and your mind will conjure pictures of landscapes both from fairy tales and from the great American mountains,” says GBS President Mark Halstead. This is some of the greatest of 20th century music, paired with the newness of Rainbow Bridge. It’s going to be a memorable night of music – and more.”

As happened at GBS’ November concert at Mertens Theater, the evening is not just about sound, but sight. The Bernhard Center’s Schelfhaudt Gallery will again feature an art show, free to symphony-goers. The night also includes a pre-concert talk at 7:00 PM right before the show in the recital hall across the lobby from the auditorium by Russell Fisher, professor of music at U.B., who will walk concertgoers through each piece of music. The program for the evening has something interesting for everyone from the moment they walk in the door,” says GBS Executive Director Phyllis Cortese. Our November concert had a similar combination of music, graphic arts and sculpture, and the audience reveled in the total arts experience.” Leandro adds, There is nothing compared to seeing music being made by an orchestra.”

This season’s New Horizons theme has thus far explored the Classical elements throughout. On April 11, GBS will finish its season with Horizons Of Water. The entire season is dedicated to the life and work of GBS’ late patrons, Herbert and Doris Harrington.
