Details An exciting season comes to its climax as Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) closes their 80th season exploring New Horizons with Horizons of the Water April 11 at Bridgeport’s Klein Memorial Auditorium at 7:30pm. The concert will feature a 53-piece full orchestra.

The season’s four previous concerts were themed on the Classical elements of Air, Fire, Earth, and Quintessence. This concert opens by floating you along Smetana’s Moldau River and closes with the emotional torrent of Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Symphony No. 5,” says GBS President Mark Halstead. Maestro Eduardo is a master at presenting the greatest of the Classics with the music of today. Between Smetana and Tchaikovsky is an exciting Concerto for Percussion by Andy Akiho, performed by Ji Hye Jung, using percussion instruments you won’t believe.”

This entire season, dedicated to late GBS Board Chair Doris Harrington and her husband, Bridgeport industrialist Herbert Harrington, promised New Horizons” in music. The Akiho composition is the latest in a five-concert series featuring an innovative modern music composition in each concert.

GBS’ 2026 – 27 concert series will be announced at this concert. Halstead says, All of us are working hard to create a five-concert series, but we need help from our donors. We are very close to meeting our fundraising goals this season, but not there yet. One last good push should do it!” A special 80-for-80” fund was established for this, GBS’s 80th Season, with donors contributing $1,000 apiece. The fund currently needs only a dozen or so contributions to meet its goal. Halstead adds, If everyone does their part, from our donors who can give an extra $50 this year to those committing to 80-for-80, we’ll finish this season well and have a great program of music starting next fall.”

GBS is also deep in planning for its annual celebration, this year a 50s Sock Hop at the Ballroom of CityWide Church in Bridgeport on April 24. The whole night will be just plain fun,” says event chair Michael Banten. We’ll have a malt shop” dinner complete with an ice cream sundae bar, and dance to 50s and 60s classics.” Hors d’oeuvres and an open wine/beer/soft drink bar will precede dinner, which will be followed by silent and live auctions. Tickets are $175 each, with tables for 8 available at $1,300, and VIP seating with the Maestro for an additional $100.
