Upon hearing the news of the victorious first battle of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, the New Haven militia unit, 2nd Company Governor’s Guard under the leadership of then patriot leader Captain Benedict Arnold assemble on the New Haven Green and demand that the town authorities allow access to the towns black powder supply in order to join the rebellion. The assembly first vote for neutrality but an angry Arnold threatens and declares “None but Almighty God shall prevent my Marching!” Giving way to the pressure, the militia is allowed to arm and march to Massachusetts picking up patriots such as Israel Putnam along the way. This marks Connecticuts entry into the Revolutionary War.
