Works from the Indo-Pacific Collection, on Film

Thu May 21 , 5:30 – 7 pm

Hosted by Yale University Art Gallery
Details Java, Indonesia, has a distinguished and deeply held tradition of performing arts. Objects in the Gallery’s collection of Indo-Pacific art continue to inspire performances, both traditional and innovative. Join us for a screening of two recent short films centering on works from the museum’s holdings. Introduction by Arielle Winnik, the Donna Torrance Assistant Curator of Indo-Pacific Art, and followed by a conversation between Ben Hagari and Winnik. Generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.

Hide and Shade” (2025, 25 mins) is a film by the artist and Yale School of Art lecturer Ben Hagari, produced with a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. It reimagines traditional Javanese performance art through the Gallery’s wayang puppets. Be advised that Hide and Shade includes footage of a ritual buffalo sacrifice.

Dancing Ink” (2026, 13 mins) is a film by Citra Aryandari, an ethnomusicologist at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM). Produced with an ISM fellowship, it explores culturally ingrained relationships among text, image, and performance through an illuminated musical manuscript in the Gallery’s holdings.
