In “one of Ozu’s purest, most elemental works” (Dave Kehr), a widowed businessman realizes the need to let his devoted daughter build a life of her own, even if that means leaving him behind. Filled with gentle humor, unspoken affection, and Ozu’s signature low-angle compositions, the film transforms ordinary meals, conversations, and rituals into a luminous meditation on family, aging, and change. Delicate, dignified, and devastating, Ozu’s swansong offers one of cinema’s most graceful farewells.
