Details Join us for a cupcake and some local history…
On Monday, June 19th, from 11 am – 7 pm, the Derby Public Library (also known as the Harcourt Wood Memorial Library) will once again celebrate the birthday of Holton Harcourt Wood, the young boy in whose memory the Library was built. The Library will also be decorated with roses, a request made by Harcourt’s parents, Colonel H. Holton and Alice Wood, at the 1902 dedication of the Library to their son (who died at age 11 in 1897).

The Derby Public Library, designed in the Colonial Revival style, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

To commemorate Harcourt’s birthday, the library staff invites the public to visit and learn more about the history of the Library and the Wood Family and enjoy a decorative cupcake as we honor this special young boy.

2023 will mark the 120th commemoration celebrating Harcourt Wood’s birthday. This tradition has become well known over the years, not only throughout the valley, but also well beyond.
