Details Enjoy the Charles J. Beaver collection of artifacts at the Osborne Homestead Museum during the month of September. Charles Joseph Beaver (born in 1890) was the chauffeur at the Kellogg Estate during Frances Osborne Kellogg’s lifetime. He was also an amateur naturalist who collected archaeological objects and wildlife specimens from the Housatonic River Valley area. His collection will be on display from September 1 – 29, 2024 during the museum’s opening hours of Thursdays-Saturdays, 10am-4pm, and Sundays, 12 – 4pm.

In honor of the life and contributions of Charles J. Beaver, the Osborne Homestead Museum will be showcasing his archaeological and wildlife artifacts during his birth month of September. Charles Beaver was a husband, father, grandfather, military veteran, chauffeur, amateur naturalist, hobbyist, and outdoor enthusiast. He housed an amazing collection which includes wildlife specimens some of which are possibly no longer living in this region. The collection represents the fields of archeology, entomology, mammalogy, oology, and conchology. He obtained these locally from Derby, Indian Well State Park, and possibly Osbornedale State Park. When Charles Beaver was employed as a chauffeur at the Kellogg Estate, he and his family lived in the small English-style cottage located on the Kellogg Estate/Osbornedale State Park adjacent to Roosevelt Drive/Route 34 in Derby. His family included wife Emma Stone and their three children Charles, Dorothy, and William. Over the years, the Beaver family have been very generous by permanently loaning to the museum Charles J. Beaver’s archaeological and wildlife collection, the Simon & Halbig doll gifted to Dorothy from Frances, and establishing a memorial to William A. and May E. Beaver on the Kellogg Estate grounds. View and enjoy the collection and more that have been provided by the Beaver family and their descendants.
