| Details | Seymour Library welcomes again the historian John Cilio. Mr. Cilio will give a nostalgic look at how the Christmas holidays were celebrated throughout the years in the United States. Christmas celebrations in America are ever changing. Common celebration symbols have been added, changed or dropped over the years. President Franklin Pierce was the first to have a Christmas tree in the White House in 1853. Since then the Christmas tree has come into its own with lights for the tree – candles and then electric lights and ornaments of glass, tin, cardboard and plastic become a constant to the American holiday. Join us for a nostalgic look on how families celebrated the holidays – remembering the cards, Christmas trees – ornaments, lights, tinsel and food. This is a free event and registration is not needed. For more information please call the Library at 203 – 888-3903. |
